Working Group

The ICAR Infrastructure Working Group coordinates the planning, operation, integration and development of the Institute’s distributed computing resources.

Its activities include monitoring and controlling the infrastructure, planning new resources, optimising existing systems and improving energy efficiency and operational performance. The group also supports the integration of new infrastructure components, defines management and maintenance policies, assesses energy requirements and promotes staff training.

Infrastructure Planning and Management

This area coordinates the evolution of the infrastructure and the relationship between the resources developed through the different projects. It supports the integration of new systems into the existing environment and plans upgrades according to scientific requirements, available capacity, operational efficiency and energy consumption.

Its responsibilities include:

• planning new computing, storage and networking resources;
• monitoring capacity, utilisation and system performance;
• integrating new infrastructure components with existing systems;
• defining management, maintenance and operational continuity policies;
• assessing energy consumption and opportunities for optimisation;
• coordinating project representatives and infrastructure managers;
• promoting technical training and knowledge sharing.

Technical Operations

This area supports the day-to-day operation of the infrastructure and the services provided to users.

Its responsibilities include:

• managing networks and connectivity;
• managing user identities, credentials and access permissions;
• configuring and maintaining computing and storage environments;
• monitoring systems and services;
• supporting users during accreditation and resource access;
• diagnosing technical problems and coordinating maintenance activities.
