Fabio Martinelli has been a research director at the National Research Council (CNR) since 2010. His research interests include security, trust, and privacy in distributed systems. He has coordinated numerous European and national research projects and founded and/or coordinated various working groups at national and international levels.

Fabio Martinelli coordinated the European Network of Excellence NESSoS (Network of Excellence in Future Internet Security) and the EU Training Network on Cyber Security (NeCS). He currently coordinates the SYNAPSE project for cyber threat management.

He was the director of the SPARTA Pilot Partnership for the European Cybersecurity Competence Network from 2019 to 2022, coordinating more than 150 organizations. Since 2023, he has been the coordinator of spoke 1 of the extended partnership SERICS for cybersecurity research in Italy.

Fabio Martinelli founded and coordinated the working group on Security and Trust Management of the European Research Consortium in Informatics and Mathematics (ERCIM) in 2004 and the WG 11.14 on Secure Engineering of the International Federation of Information Processing (IFIP).

Fabio Martinelli was co-chair of the Italian technological platform for homeland security (SERIT) and co-chair of WG3 on Research and Innovation of the Network and Information Security (NIS) Platform promoted by the European Commission. In this role, he co-edited the first strategic research agenda on cybersecurity at the European level in 2015.

Fabio Martinelli served as an expert in the H2020 Protection and Security Advisory Committee (PASAG) for the European Commission (2015-2020).

Additionally, he was among the five promoters of the public-private partnership on cybersecurity ECSO, initiated by the European Commission, which includes more than 300 organizations across Europe (including 60 universities and research centers). He is currently vice chairman of the board representing academia and coordinator of WG6 of ECSO dedicated to research and innovation.
