Study and development of specific techniques for the analysis of DNA mycroarray images in order to obtain automatic procedures for estimating the degree of gene expression; Creation of a software tool for the generation of DNA microarray images to allow an objective evaluation of the performance of gridding algorithms and spot intensity measurement; Formalization of a new approach, capable of providing good performance, in estimating the flow field for displacements varying from fractions of pixels to a few pixels per frame. The designed technique allows us to overcome some limitations typical of differential methods, to increase the reliability of the results in the case of the presence of isolated mobile objects in the scene and to obtain reliable estimates even in the presence of noise; As part of a project on methodologies and tools for indexing and retrieving videos and images by content, in order to identify a complete object and not just parts of it or its surroundings, a hybrid segmentation technique was created , based on edge detection, region growing and optical flow estimation procedures; Regarding the problem of evaluating the semantic contents of a film, a method has been developed for the automatic segmentation in shots of video sequences compressed in MPEG format. The method created, based on heuristic considerations regarding the characteristics of MPEG streams, allowed the achievement of a high percentage of identified shots while maintaining, at the same time, a low computational cost and also proving effective in the detection of special effects such as zooms and fades; As part of the project entitled: “Protocols for the transfer of multimedia data”, issues relating to the network transfer of digital compressed video, traffic models and source characterization were addressed. A method has been developed for transforming the flow produced by VBR sources into another that is easier to characterize and manage, i.e. simplifying the resource allocation schemes, the connection admission system and the control of compliance with the session parameters .
