The EXPLORER project aims to develop portable, robust, and user-friendly photonic technologies for studying extreme natural environments directly in situ, avoiding the need to collect and transport samples to a laboratory, a process that alters their properties and limits current analytical capabilities. By combining expertise in micro/nano fabrication, photonics, electronics, data analysis, and biology, the consortium will create innovative tools that can also be used by non-experts and applied to a wide range of settings (volcanic hot springs, glaciers, contaminated deep-lake beds). These technologies will enable new discoveries and fundamental investigations, improving understanding of fragile ecosystems, climate change, environmental pollution, and even supporting the prediction of volcanic eruptions.
