Cyber-Physical Systems and Robotics

The Cyber-Physical Systems and Robotics (CPS+R) area proposes innovations in the strategic integration of digital, physical processes, and automation. This constitutes the essential infrastructure for addressing the challenges of the European digital transformation. This research sector is increasingly assuming strategic importance as it is cross-cutting across nearly all Horizon Europe funding clusters.

In this context, ICAR possesses distinctive expertise and is positioned across three fundamental dimensions:

  • Distributed, Reliable and Efficient Management focuses on the design and development of large-scale, autonomous, and intelligent systems, with core competencies in IoT, Edge Intelligence, and Digital Twin technologies.
  • Cognitive Cyber-Physical Systems integrate artificial intelligence (specifically reliable and explainable AI) with physical systems capable of acquiring data from the environment, and which need to act based on context and experience.
  • Human-Centric CPS develops technologies such as augmented reality, collaborative robotics, and conversational interfaces, following human-in-the-loop paradigms that ensure user trust and acceptability.

ICAR-CNR also boasts significant infrastructures for the CPS+R domain, including IoT laboratories equipped with heterogeneous sensors, edge computing platforms, and innovative VR/XR devices. The application domains encompass smart cities and critical infrastructures, industry and manufacturing with Industry 4.0/5.0 solutions, healthcare via wearable devices and augmented reality in minimally invasive surgery, robotic automation in sustainable manufacturing, and intelligent cognitive environments that autonomously optimise comfort and energy consumption.”
