Giovanni Maria Farinella is  a Full Professor at the University of Catania where teaches “Machine Learning” and “Social Media Management” for the Undergraduate Courses in Computer Science.

He has got the National Scientific Qualification to Full Professor in Computer Science (ASN – Prima Fascia, SSD 01/B1) on 28 March 2018.

He is senior member of the IPLAB Research Group at the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science of the University of Catania. He has participated to different national and international projects and he is currently member of the Scientific Board of the public-private research laboratory for Computer Vision and Machine Learning between University of Catania and STMicroelectronics.

Prof. Farinella is author of more than 120 papers in proceedings of international conferences and international journals. He is inventor and co-author of 6 patents produced in joint with industrial partners. He is Associate Editor of the journal Pattern Recognition (Elsevier) and serves as reviewer of main conferences in computer vision and pattern recognition (CVPR, ICCV, ECCV, BMVC). He has been Area Chair of ICCV 2017 and has taken part on the board committee of well renowned international conferences, such as ICCV 2017, BMVC 2017, ACM MM 2013.

Giovanni Maria Farinella is founder and scientific directors of the international schools “International Computer Vision Summer School”  and “Medical Imaging Summer School”. http://iplab.dmi.unict.it/icvss

His research activity at CNR-ICAR concerns about Computer Vision and Machine Learning algorithms for Egocentric Vision Systems, Scene Understanding and Augmented Reality.

Prof. Giovanni Maria Farinella is involved in the activities of the research group Cognitive Systems for Robotics.
