Appointment Of Fabio Martinelli As Director Of The ICAR Institute Of CNR
05/11/2024 – The Board of Directors of the National Research Council (CNR) has appointed Fabio Martinelli as the new director of the ICAR Institute. Martinelli, who succeeds acting director Maurizio Urso, is a leading researcher in the field of cybersecurity, with extensive experience and numerous successes at both the national and international levels.Fabio MartinelliSince 2010, Martinelli has been a research director at CNR, dedicating his career to the development of solutions for security, trust, and privacy in distributed systems.

Among his main initiatives, Martinelli has coordinated projects such as NESSoS, the European network of excellence for future Internet security, and currently leads SYNAPSE, a European project aimed at advanced cyber threat management. From 2019 to 2022, he also directed the pilot partnership SPARTA, an important collaboration for creating a European competence network in cybersecurity, involving over 150 organizations.Since 2023, Martinelli has also served as the coordinator of spoke 1 of SERICS, an Italian strategic partnership for cybersecurity research, further consolidating his commitment to information security. His appointment as ICAR director represents a pivotal moment for the institute, which will benefit from his leadership and his ability to merge research and innovation.

With over twenty years of experience, including prominent roles at the European Research Consortium in Informatics and Mathematics (ERCIM) and the Network and Information Security (NIS) Platform of the European Commission, Martinelli is also vice president of the board of ECSO, a European cybersecurity partnership that includes over 300 organizations.
With the appointment of Fabio Martinelli, the ICAR Institute of CNR is preparing for a phase of growth and innovation, aiming to consolidate its excellence across a wide range of research fields, from Artificial Intelligence to Cyber Physical Systems, from Data Science to Quantum Computing. Martinelli’s strategic vision and experience, combined with the multidisciplinary skills already present at ICAR, will guide the institute towards new scientific and technological challenges, contributing to research and innovation advancements and strengthening international collaboration.
