VALUE – Visual Analysis For Localization And Understanding Of Environments

The project aims to provide a computer system capable of profoundly modifying the current methods of the fruition of a museum site or an area of cultural interest. The proposed system uses minimally invasive and easily wearable electronic devices, equipped with visors, video camera, microphones and audio speakers. The VALUE project aims to create a demonstrative prototype of an innovative software system capable of processing automatically in real-time the video information obtained through the video camera. The goal is to determine the detail of an observed object or asset accurately and to locate exact visitor’s position in the environment.

The acquired images will be processed online, applying Computer Vision and Machine Learning algorithms on them, for an automatic analysis that will allow determining the details of the objects observed and the visual attention of the visitor. Data obtained by the analysis of the images will enable the VALUE system to offer the user new services and goods (in augmented reality). Moreover, VALUE aims to enrich the visitor experience by giving suggestions and recommendations for further visits both in the same structure and in other sites connected to it. The VALUE system will also be able to analyze, interpret and answer by verbal interactions in natural language to increase the visitor’s interest and capture his\her attention, and capturing emotional impacts and experience’s judgments. Such data will be stored, analyzed and appropriately coded in such a way as to increase the knowledge base through methodologies borrowed from Machine Learning and Neural Networks.
