Abstract:
The project’s goal is to demonstrate how new technologies (IoT, Edge Computing, AI, Machine Learning, etc.), once integrated into buildings (both residential and non-residential), can enable cognitive management of resources, internal processes, and interaction with energy infrastructures (electricity grid, gas network, district heating, etc.). This new management expands buildings’ capabilities to operate autonomously and with minimal human intervention, in a more efficient, flexible, interactive, and sustainable way, laying the foundations for a Green New Deal for buildings. The main advantages these technologies promise to offer building owners, occupants, and their environments, as well as energy network operators, range from reducing energy consumption and CO2 emissions, increasing the penetration of renewable energy sources in energy systems, to promoting health, well-being, and productivity. The challenges for a cognitive building are numerous, including promoting inclusivity for all its occupants, understood as the ability to maximize the use of services offered to various users, and the ability to extract contextual information, such as studying regularities or anomalies in energy consumption or recognizing activities in a given environment, in order to reduce consumption, ensure more efficient resource management, and improve quality of life.
