The SNECS research project, funded under the National Operational Program (PON) Research and Competitiveness 2007-2013 – Axis I – Support for structural changes – I Action: High-tech districts and related networks, has been scientifically coordinated by a researcher of the Cognitive Systems Laboratory of the CNR-ICAR. SNECS was aimed at collecting and transmitting the contents of scientific knowledge of the artistic, archaeological, literary and historical-philosophical nature of the Campania region. Particular attention has been placed on the historical centres, activating and experimenting new strategies for their representation, organization, diffusion and promotion. These strategies, based on paradigms of technological intelligence, represent the challenges of Smart Cities and Smart environment, which the European community asks to collect. The SNECS Project has observed and measured the ability to be smart through interventions aimed at the economy, the population, governance, mobility, the environment, the preservation of cultural heritage and tourist accommodation. The SNECS project supported such a vision by designing a set of ICT services capable of collecting heterogeneous cultural heritage information and to present them to experts and tourists and to measure the effects on the community. In particular, in order to support the achievement of this objective, a “”knowledge atlas”” relating to the modelling and characterization of historical centres has been realized. It contains a series of information made coherent with each other at different levels of information: from the air-photogrammetric to the cadastral one, from that of the toponymy to that of the intended use, from that of the wall structure to that of the identification of the routes followed by the canalisations of the city services. All the information gathered by the ICT services converged in a high definition and flexible “virtual” atlas. As part of the project, several technological demonstrators have been designed, implemented and experimented in prestigious sites such as Castel Nuovo, the National Archaeological Museum of Naples (MANN) and the Complex of San Domenico Maggiore.
