MISSION – Monitoring Of The Reduction Of Health Risks And Indoor Pollution

The collaboration on the project is aimed at providing innovative industrial research solutions regarding the creation of an IT platform capable of managing the pollution data that will be processed in the project. Pollution, indoors and outdoors, is recognized as the main risk factor for non-communicable diseases, together with unhealthy diets, tobacco smoking, alcohol abuse and a sedentary lifestyle. The high number of daily hours spent in indoor environments (over 90%) determines significant exposure to chemical and biological pollutants, causing a significant health risk. Furthermore, the concentration of pollutants can be higher in closed environments than in outdoor spaces. Energy efficiency in residential buildings can lead to health benefits, reducing the infiltration of external air pollutants and improving microclimatic conditions and indoor comfort, but, if not associated with adequate air exchange, it can concentrate pollutants indoors with a consequent worsening of air quality. As part of the project, we will therefore proceed to carry out assessments of the relationship between indoor air quality, energy efficiency of buildings, viral circulation and state of health. Actions will then be carried out on the appropriate behaviors to be adopted in indoor environments to improve the healthiness of the air, reduce the risk of viral circulation, promote building redevelopment interventions (choice of materials, measures and mitigation of radon, choice and maintenance of ventilation systems), make health interventions effective. The final objective concerns the promotion, development and support of European and national policies and regulations on energy efficiency in buildings, in relation to the health risks associated with indoor air quality and human health.
