Advancing Precision Medicine: Multi-Disciplinary Research and Emerging Strategies in Biomedical Informatics
Precision medicine has emerged as a transformative approach that addresses individual variability in disease diagnosis, treatment, and prevention. Central to its success is the effective management, curation, and analysis of multi-source, multi-modal data drawn from a broad range of bio-related research fields, experimental procedures, and clinical information. Indeed, the most critical challenge lies in translating this complex, multifaceted data into actionable clinical insights. Computational biology, through advanced analytical techniques and predictive modeling, plays a central role in interpreting vast data volumes and transforming them into meaningful, precise applications. Given these challenges, a multidisciplinary approach is essential to fully realize the potential of precision medicine.
This special issue seeks to bring together contributions from multiple disciplines—including omics science, structural bioinformatics, information management, big data analysis, biostatistics, and artificial intelligence—to explore cutting-edge developments in precision medicine. We aim to collect and present novel approaches, methodologies, and tools for enhancing the interpretability and application of biological and clinical data. By fostering multidisciplinarity, this special issue aspires to deepen the integration and analysis of data from different sources to provide a unified framework for extracting novel insights and driving improved therapeutic outcomes.
The issue follows the organization of the 19th annual edition of the Bioinformatics and Computational Biology Conference (BBCC2024), held in Naples on November 2024 (https://www.bbcc-meetings.it/). The special issue will be comprised of extensions of some of the best works presented in the workshop, along with papers submitted within the open call, taking also into account the target audience of the JBHI journal.
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Data Analysis Methodologies and Tools
- Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning Algorithms
- Integration of Multi-Source, Multi-Modal Data
- Big Data Storage and Management
- Network and Systems Biology
