REMIAM – Reti Musei Intelligenti Ad Alta Multimedialità

The phenomenon of the Cultural Digitalisation can be considered reality for many years and it sees museums and archives as protagonists of this historic time that strongly pushes towards an improvement of the digital performance of such spaces, through a strong involvement of the whole territory and people.
Participation, sharing, full accessibility and enjoyment represent the guidelines of the Intelligent and High Multimedia Museums Network – OPS project. The main objective is the improvement of the cultural accessibility of museums and of the surrounding territory through the “Museums Network” paradigm. The Museums Network aims to promote cooperation policies to improve the quality of the offered cultural services, to stimulate the creation of a new museum capable of generating new forms of technological innovations, economic growth of the territory and a changing of the quality of life.
The goal of the Museums Network is to provide a concrete and comprehensive planning of cultural services, by overcoming the fragmentation of individual interventions on single museums. It aims to involve all available human, material and intangible resources.
The Network of Museums shares services, rules and goals to improve their activities and enhance the whole territory by coordinating and disseminating the calendar of cultural events, exhibitions and temporary initiatives. Within the Network, museums communicate to each other by sharing a rich and differentiated set of services aimed at promoting and expanding their cultural and educational mission. They are strongly linked to the surrounding territory, feeding new models of valorisation through Future Internet paradigm.

The Network of Museums intends to develop an integrated communication model to enhance the cultural accessibility by using innovative and web-based tools. The phenomenon of the use of the Social Networks by museums is a growing trend, as demonstrated by a recent study highlighting the exponential increase in content published by museums on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram. In particular, within the Network of Museums, many communication activities will be developed, especially in the multimedia research field: from the websites generation and collective brands, common profiles on social networks, press relationships and possible lenders. Joint projects will also be developed in the field of didactics, from simple publications to the organization of both real and virtual workshops and itineraries.
The novel museum concept, within the network, is based on the capability to describe and narrate himself by means of innovative technological tools. By means of these instruments artworks will be able to “talk” with visitors, with the goal of abandoning the simple and static enjoyment towards a cultural, intellectual and emotional one, capable of satisfying different tastes and needs.

The innovative technologies of the Internet of Things (IoT) and of the Augmented Reality will be used to perform such a change, by designing a technological skeleton supporting the communication and the understanding of the knowledge.
The project aims to pursue a multi-disciplinary approach in order to design a new model of museum space where art, technology, new models of interaction and innovative communication techniques can support the process of transformation of traditional museums. The goal is to ideally break down the doors of museums, amplify the cultural message, build cultural and interactive dialogues with the rest of the world, exploiting the potential of modern technology. These technologies represent the needed support to trigger innovative enjoyment mechanisms, starting from the principle that the vast majority of public access to a museum does not have the means to understand the surrounding artworks and spaces.
Observing, contextualizing and deepening, represent the visitor’s tasks to which the technology can provide immediate and engaging support, promoting the network of cultural referrals through semantic connections, thus increasing the level of interest and involvement of the visitor. Another objective is to invest in new generations, starting with a strong involvement of the schools. The OPS project with the Network of Museums intends to engage the schools through the development and promotion of educational activities aimed at the diffusion of the knowledge of the museum heritage.

The goal is to increase and promote the educational mission of each single museum, through shared and coordinated cultural management. Virtual and interactive visits, gamification methodologies, new interaction models, represent the technological tools that the OPS project intends to develop to establish a strong connection with the new generations approaching a Museum space for the first time. Encouraging the development of educational activities of museums, from one hand can bring young people closer to the cultural heritage of their own territory, and from the other hand, can stimulate the important comparison between the School and the Institutions of the Museum, regarding knowledge diffusions and related methodologies.

A Museum able to tell and communicate the Art through innovative gaming tools with interactive multimedia multi-touch tables, multi-player holographic pyramids, and spaces dedicated to children and families in order to fascinate this category, involving it and making it as an active part. In the scenario of the valorisation of the area surrounding the Network od Museums, the OPS project aims to support high-quality handicraft production,
The museums communicate with local craftsmen, promoting new artistic production mechanisms through the use of innovative technology tools such as the modern 3D printers. Today, the 3D printing is increasingly widespread and reachable, with a high degree of precision and an high production quality, thanks to the possiblity to print on a variety of plastics, wood, resins, etc. The OPS project can be achieved with a systemic and multidisciplinary approach. The research and development activities of the OPS project propose the innovation of both the whole process and of the different products to be experimented in each phase of the processes of the fruition and valorisation.
The innovation of processes and products that the project intends to study and experience is the cornerstone of a new sustainable museum network model, capable of preserving the heritage for future generations.
