Interdisciplinary challenges in cybersecurity: from ethical, social, and legal aspects to technological ones

On March 23, 2026, the final event of Spoke 1 of the SERICS project will take place at the Starhotels Metropole in Rome, focusing on the interdisciplinary challenges of cybersecurity.

The event will provide an opportunity to present the main scientific results developed within Spoke 1 and to explore the relationship between emerging technologies, fundamental rights, and ethics. Particular attention will be given to the impact of artificial intelligence, disinformation phenomena, and the evolution of digital rights in the surveillance society. During the day, the results of several projects within Spoke 1 will also be presented, including CybeRights, DiSe, HARD-DISC, and EMDAS.

The program will open with institutional remarks by Fabio Martinelli (CNR), Erik Longo (University of Florence), Carlo Colapietro (Roma Tre University), and Luigi Romano (Parthenope University). This will be followed by a round table on the role of academia in the strategic development of national cybersecurity, with a focus on the HARD-DISC and CybeRights projects and contributions from researchers from several Italian universities.

The afternoon session will be dedicated to Digital Sovereignty, covering topics such as:

Social aspects of cybersecurity in smart grids
The relationship between privacy and transparency in labor law
Risk assessment models for cloud services
Data sovereignty technologies
Federated learning for data protection and the use of artificial intelligence for detecting disinformation operations
